Implications of mathematical competence in education: a systematic review

Contenido principal del artículo

Autores/as

Introduction: Mathematics education constitutes a fundamental component of cognitive and academic development due to its contribution to reasoning, problem solving, and decision-making. In this regard, understanding the factors involved in the development of mathematical competencies is relevant for guiding more effective and comprehensive educational practices. Objective: To analyze the implications of mathematical competencies in the educational context based on the available scientific evidence. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, using a qualitative approach, descriptive scope, and content analysis technique. For the synthesis of the findings, 23 scientific articles were analyzed, of which 13 were retrieved from Scopus and 10 from SciELO. The review enabled the evidence to be organized according to the main factors associated with the development of mathematical competencies. Results: The findings showed that 35% of the studies addressed cognitive and motivational factors, while 30% focused on pedagogical and assessment strategies and 25% on the integration of educational technologies. The evidence reviewed indicates that the development of mathematical competencies does not depend exclusively on content mastery but rather on the interaction among cognitive and motivational processes, instructional strategies, assessment, and technological resources. Conclusions: Mathematical competencies are consolidated through the integration of cognitive, affective, pedagogical, and technological dimensions. Consequently, strengthening these competencies requires comprehensive educational approaches that combine appropriate pedagogical strategies, formative assessment, and technological resources with students' characteristics and learning needs.
