Introduction: The university experience depends not only on students' academic abilities but also on their level of engagement in the educational process. Active engagement may foster the development of research-related competencies and strengthen scientific training in higher education. Objective: To determine the influence of student engagement on perceived research skills among Veterinary Medicine students at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, during 2024. Methodology: A quantitative basic study was conducted using a non-experimental, cross-sectional design with a correlational-causal scope. The sample consisted of 169 students from the fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth semesters, selected through quota sampling. Two scales validated through expert judgment were administered, demonstrating adequate reliability levels (KR-20 = 0.923 and 0.869). Due to the absence of multivariate normality, a structural equation model was estimated using asymptotically distribution-free estimation, together with a sensitivity analysis using robust maximum likelihood estimation. Results: Student engagement showed a direct, positive, and statistically significant effect on perceived research skills (β = 0.66; p < 0.001). The model presented acceptable fit indices, indicating a relevant association between students' active participation and their perceptions of their research capabilities. Conclusions: Student engagement constitutes a relevant component of the university experience and is positively associated with perceived research skills. Strengthening student engagement may contribute to more active and participatory scientific training among Veterinary Medicine students.
