Introduction: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has transformed university practices for searching, writing, and analyzing information, creating new opportunities to strengthen formative research processes. However, its integration also poses challenges related to the responsible and ethical use of these tools. Objective: To determine the relationship between the use of generative artificial intelligence tools and formative research among students from the Faculty of Engineering at a public university in Lima, Peru. Methodology: A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 200 university students who completed a questionnaire. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the variables and their respective dimensions. Results: Mobile phones were the primary devices used to access GenAI tools (65.00%), while the most frequent purpose was clarifying questions or doubts (48.50%). A very strong, positive, direct correlation was found between GenAI use and formative research (rₛ = 0.95; p < 0.001). Likewise, strong correlations were obtained with the dimensions of knowing (rₛ = 0.84), doing (rₛ = 0.93), and being (rₛ = 0.89), all of which were statistically significant. Conclusions: The use of generative artificial intelligence tools is directly, positively, and very strongly associated with formative research among the students evaluated. These findings highlight the potential of GenAI as an academic support resource; however, its integration requires ethical guidelines that promote autonomy, responsibility, and the development of research competencies.
