Digital bridges: reading comprehension in the age of artificial intelligence

Contenido principal del artículo

Autores/as

Introduction: Reading comprehension is a cognitive process through which students reconstruct the explicit and implicit meaning of a text and develop a critical stance toward its content. In this context, the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools represents an emerging alternative for strengthening different levels of reading comprehension among secondary school students. Objective: To analyze the influence of artificial intelligence on reading comprehension among secondary school students based on scientific literature published between 2021 and 2026. Methodology: A qualitative-descriptive literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was performed in the Scopus, SciELO, Dialnet, and ERIC databases, considering studies related to the use of AI tools and the development of reading comprehension among secondary school students. Results: The findings showed that 75% of AI-supported interventions reported improvements in literal and inferential comprehension. However, only 30% of the studies identified significant improvements in critical comprehension, suggesting greater challenges in using these tools for higher-order cognitive processes. The evidence also highlights the importance of teacher mediation in guiding interaction with AI, promoting independent interpretation, and preventing technological dependence that may limit critical thinking. Conclusions: Artificial intelligence shows potential as a cognitive mediator for strengthening reading comprehension, particularly at the literal and inferential levels. However, its contribution to critical reading requires intentional pedagogical intervention focused on analysis, argumentation, and critical evaluation of information.
